Bush Highway is a scenic drive along the Salt River. There are several recreation areas along the route which make for great photography. This area is one of our favorites for portrait photography, but in addition this is one of the best drives for wildlife photography in the Phoenix area. Not only can you see eagles, coyotes, snakes and more but this area is home to the Salt River Horses. Our favorite recreation sites for viewing the wild horses are: Coon's Bluff, Granite Reef, Pebble Beach and Butcher Jones. Keep in mind it's necessary to be respectful of wildlife and keep a safe distance of 50 feet from the animals. Our favorite areas for portrait photography are Coon's Bluff and Water Users Area. Water User Area is also one of our go-to locations for night photography. The mountains and water make a perfect backdrop for viewing the stars. If you are a local and haven't been out to the river you should know it's not just for summer tubers! If you are visiting Phoenix we recommend this area be put on the top of your list of places to see, especially if you are travelling with your camera.
As always we want to remind you of the importance of respecting all these locations and wildlife. It's up to us as a community to set an example. If we don't clean up after ourselves or act disrespectful we are going to lose accessibility to so many places. Please do your best to leave no trace behind and respect each other as fellow photographers and explorers as we share these spaces.
