Talking to locals is the best way to learn about your surroundings! This is such a huge benefit of community photo groups/meetup.com. Our group has a handful of regulars but we also have a large rotation of new Arizona transplants as they learn and embrace their new surroundings. To be honest this is the main reason we created our meetup group, to get out and explore Arizona after a move from Ilinois with people who don't mind going slow, stopping to capture memories, all while having a good time. It's great to learn about new places from our Arizona natives, but it's even better that we are able to turn around and share these places with others who have a sense of exploring with cameras in hand.
This was a perfect quick after work adventure. We met about 1 hour before sunset to try and capture the best light and as you can see we had many varieties and colors of roses as our subjects! A couple non-rose photo bombers too! Once we got too hot to continue we headed on over to Boulders on Southern for a bite to eat, a cold drink and trivia. Have to admit, as a team, we were kicking butt at the trivia but we left before it was over as it was getting late!
Photo tips for flowers: Avoid dappled light as much as possible. Aim to photograph you garden the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset to get the least harsh light. Fill your frame with the flower and or petals. Try to photograph the flower from 3 different angles, for example get in real close, try a back lit angle, or even try from underneath the flower. A macro lens is a great choice for gardens, as it allows to capture the tiny visitors as well!
