Happy National Hammock Day!

We could not let National Hammock Day pass by without a blog post. Who doesn't love a hammock? They are extremely portable, comfortable, and are good for you! Studies have shown that sleeping in a hammock puts your body in the optimal sleeping position with your head slightly above your body. The comfortable position combined with the swaying can allow you to fall asleep faster, deeper and strengthens your brain waves. The better you sleep the more energy you will have for your adventures!

Hammocks are great for night photography too. You can have your camera set up within reach and your intervalometer set to capture continuous images all while you relax in the swaying comfort!

Some tips for "hanging" out in your hammock:

1) Have a good sag. You don't want your hammock too tight or your body will not be in the optimal position. Because you are suspended there are no pressure points on y our body. Having your head slightly elevated from your body provides the brain with better blood circulation and helps with breathing. A good sag will allow for a lower center of gravity, decreasing the chances of you falling out.

2) Ensure whichever suspension system you choose is rated for your weight. Choose sturdy trees to hang your hammock from. For safety reasons you should also not hang your hammock more than 3 feet off the ground (we actually recommend around 18 in off the ground). We use the Eagles Nest Outfitters Atlas suspension system to hang our hammock. They are super easy to use and very strong!

3) Hammocks were actually designed for your to lay diagonally. Try this position next time you are in your hammock for increased comfort.

4) Add a sleeping pad under your sleeping bag for added warmth and insulation when the temperatures drop at night.

5) Additional accessories to keep you comfortable include bug netting and tarp to keep you dry from rain.

6) When your hammock is not in use it is wise to take it down to prevent wildlife from getting themselves caught in the hammock!

We hope these tips encourage you to get out and relax. Our go-to hammock is this ENO hammock:
