Papago Parks almost 1500 acres actually crosses from Phoenix to Tempe AZ. The park is adjacent to Phoenix Zoo, Desert Botanical Gardens several hiking paths, small ponds, bike paths, a pyramid tomb of Arizona's first governor and the landmark knows as Hole-in-the-Rock. Hole-in-the-rock is a geological formation which you can climb .3 miles to the top and view city scapes through the actual hole in the formation. If you choose not to make the relatively easy walk up to the hole, there are many photographic opportunities walking around the ponds including a variety of birds, plants, and palm trees. This is a fun location for sunset photography or portrait sessions. There are better places if you are looking for fun night views of the city of Phoenix, but for an early morning or late afternoon easy sunset photo walk this park is recommended. Bring a picnic or enjoy a bite at one of the many restaurants in Tempe. A favorite of ours is The Lodge Sasquatch Kitchen. For those interested in portrait photography at Papago Park, at this time there is no permit or fee required.
